Renewable Energy, even Cash from Sewage and Organic Waste
The Simple (and largely unattended) Things in Life
Going green is not that hard. We all know that it is the simple things in life that make the biggest difference. Right?
Yeah, right. These simple things also happen to be the most overlooked, and therefore, remain unattended or largely postponed.

Raw sewage, a major pollutant
Information Abounds
On a personal level, I kept agonizing on what I need to do to make things better and make more sense of how I live. Then I discovered Al Gore’s videos on TED Global and Brightcove. Later on, It was then that I came across this interesting article on CNN about turning sewage into renewable energy and cash. Yeah, it is happening in San Antonio Texas. Looking around, I read about similar initiatives elsewhere, like this one on the BBC web site.
Thoroughly enlightened, I once again took a long look at my past and do not intend to ever look back. I gotta go green. I mean, seriously.
I have come to realize that I can do some simple things to make my world far much better. Like turning off lights when they are not necessary. Turning off the air conditioner too. Among other things.
What can we do with a lot of *#it?
This got me thinking. Locally, Nairobi’s sewer system is set for an upgrade that will cost Sh 2 billion. Perhaps they realized that unchecked, we would have such road signs in the future…

We can harness renewable energy from sewage
My former college (JKUAT) has this expansive sewerage treatment plant that was recently expanded when the AICAD headquarters was being constructed. I see amazing potential in that very plant. This would definitely put the T in technology to good use there.
On a smaller scale, those who live out of town on farms can consider biogas energy. The University of Adelaide web site provides exhaustive information on biogas generation and related renewable energy projects.
The Time is Now
Now is the time to do that, and I feel I’m good to go, even in my own small way. And in any case, why the heck not?
Read these articles and see if you will change your mind about Renewable Energy and Green Energy initiatives such as Green IT and Green Computing.
Now, are you ready to go green? If not, why not?
