On Friday, March 20, the Business Daily published an article titled “Are we going green or is this just a sick joke?” Reading through, I do acknowledge the writer’s take on why green technology hasn’t been as widely adopted as the hype that often heralds GreenTech campaigns.

Going green is in fact informed largely by economic reasons as well as the need to do the right and responsible thing, in a world that is faced with the real dangers of climate change, global warming and a dire energy crisis.

Low crop production, growing population, pollution, increased demand for energy sources and political reasons all work in tandem to make an already bad situation worse.

Green and Environmental TechnologyGreen Technology is variously referred to as environmental technology, and abbreviated as greentech and envirotech respectively. It is the use of environmental science to conserve the natural environment and natural resources. Also, greentech seeks to curb the negative impacts of human involvement. All this is geared towards sustainable development.

Various technologies are in place which can be employed both affordably and widely to advance the green agenda.

  • Using renewable energy sources
  • Making use of efficient machinery
  • Conserving energy both in homes and our work stations
  • Practising paperless computing whenever possible
  • Not polluting the environment
  • Individual effort to reduce one’s carbon footprint

Some of the technologies are often enhanced by both individual and collective lifestyle change.

All in all, the green agenda is viable. Going green is actually necessary. It’s not a fad. It’s not just the next best and big thing. Going green is the way to go.
